Wat Arun Visitor Guide: Timing, Tickets and What to See

How long to allow, when to go, and what you will actually find on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya.

Wat Arun Visitor Guide: Timing, Tickets and What to See

Short answer: Wat Arun is worth a visit, and you can see it properly in about an hour. Allow a little longer if you want to photograph it from the river. It sits on the opposite bank from the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, so most visitors treat it as the middle stop of a half-day temple circuit rather than a separate trip.

Do you need to book ahead? We have no timed-entry system to point you to, so confirm the current ticketing arrangements on the temple's official visitor information before you go. Do not rely on a blog, including this one, for opening hours or ticket prices.

Who this guide is for

It suits first-time visitors in Bangkok who have limited time and want to know whether Wat Arun earns a slot beside the bigger names. It is less useful if you want a deep dive into Thai Buddhist history. For that, a guide on the ground makes more difference than any article.

What you actually see

The temple is known for its tall central spire, a Khmer-style prang that rises over the river. Up close, the surface is covered in small pieces of porcelain and shell set into plaster, in floral patterns. This is the detail most people miss while taking photographs from a distance.

Smaller prangs stand at the corners, and the compound is quieter and less ornate than the Grand Palace. Steep, narrow steps lead up the main tower. They are not for anyone nervous of heights, and the spire has been under scaffolding for restoration in the past, so check what is accessible when you plan your visit.

Getting there and timing

Wat Arun is on the Thonburi (west) bank of the Chao Phraya. The usual approach is to walk to the Tha Tien pier by Wat Pho and take the short cross-river ferry. The crossing takes only a few minutes. A taxi or ride-hailing car over the bridges is slower and usually unnecessary.

Bangkok is hot and humid, and the temple has little shade. Go early in the day or later in the afternoon. Midday is the hardest time for crowds and heat together. The view of the spire from the Bangkok side of the river in the evening light is popular, but confirm closing times before counting on a late visit.

Dress code

It is a working religious site. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and you may be turned away otherwise. Our Thailand temple etiquette and dress code guide covers what to wear, and what to pack for Thailand helps with the rest of the bag.

Wat Arun on a Helios tour

If you would rather not organise the pieces yourself, the Bangkok Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun guided tour takes about 6 hours and travels by road, on foot and by public ferry. It runs as a small-group shared tour of up to 15 guests, with a licensed English-speaking guide.

  • Amulet Market, about 30 minutes
  • Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, about 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Ferry to Wat Arun, about 1 hour
  • Wat Pho, about 1 hour, where the tour ends

Be realistic about the day: it is a lot of walking in the heat, and Wat Arun is a relatively short stop within it. Entry tickets are not in the base price. You can add them as an optional extra when booking. Food, drinks and hotel pickup are also not included.

If you want to see the Grand Palace without feeling rushed, read our practical guide to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. It is also worth considering a second day for something different, such as the best day trips from Bangkok.

What to verify on official sites before you go

  • Current opening and closing times, and any days or ceremonies that affect them
  • Ticket price and where to buy it
  • Whether the main tower steps are open
  • Any restoration work affecting the spire
  • Dress code rules and whether covering items can be rented or bought on site

Wat Arun FAQ

How long do I need at Wat Arun?

About an hour is enough to walk the grounds, look at the porcelain detail and take photographs. Add time if you want to climb the steps, if they are open.

Should I book Wat Arun tickets in advance?

Check the temple's official visitor information for the current rules. If you join our guided tour, entry tickets can be added as an optional extra at booking.

Is Wat Arun on the same side of the river as Wat Pho?

No. Wat Pho and the Grand Palace are on the Bangkok side, and Wat Arun is across the Chao Phraya in Thonburi. A short public ferry connects them.

Is the Helios Wat Arun tour private?

No. It is listed as a small-group shared tour for up to 15 guests, with a licensed English-speaking guide.
