United States 7 Day Itinerary: What Fits and What to Skip
One week works well for New York and Washington DC by train, and badly for a coast-to-coast dash.
The short answer: with seven days, choose one region. New York plus Washington DC, joined by a morning train, is the best fit. Coast to coast is not. Flights, airport time and time zones eat most of a day each way, so a New York–San Francisco–Las Vegas week leaves you seeing mostly airports.
This plan is for first-time visitors who want the big landmarks without living out of a suitcase. The Helios trips mentioned here are all in New York, so the Washington days are for you to arrange yourself.
The route: four nights New York, two in Washington
| Day | Where | What |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | New York | Arrive, settle in, short evening walk. Treat this as a half day at best. |
| 2 | New York | Midtown landmarks on foot |
| 3 | New York | Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island |
| 4 | New York | Lower Manhattan neighbourhoods and food |
| 5 | Train, then Washington DC | Morning train, afternoon on the National Mall |
| 6 | Washington DC | Museums and monuments |
| 7 | Washington DC | Fly home; a short morning stroll only if your flight is late |
New York, days 1 to 4
On day 2, start with the Manhattan landmarks walk. It links Times Square, Bryant Park, Grand Central Terminal and Rockefeller Center in about three hours. Times Square is loud and crowded, which is why it comes first, while you have energy. Grand Central is the one to slow down for.
Day 3 is the long one: the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island trip runs about five hours from Battery Park, with Liberty Island and Ellis Island on the route. Expect security screening and boat queues. Do not plan anything demanding for the evening.
On day 4, take the Lower Manhattan food and neighbourhoods tour. It covers Chinatown, Little Italy and SoHo with tasting stops in about three hours. Little Italy is now small, and a guide helps you see what is left of it.
Each of these runs as a shared small group (up to 12 guests) or as a private tour for your own party. Your quote confirms the guide, access and final price. Admission, transport, food and tastings are not included unless the quote says so.
Day 5: the train to Washington
Take Amtrak from New York Penn Station, not Grand Central. Allow a little over three hours on the faster services, and longer on slower ones. It is the most civilised leg of any short American trip: city centre to city centre, with no airport transfer.
Washington is spread out. The National Mall looks short on a map and is a long walk in summer humidity. Pair the monuments with a few Smithsonian museums rather than trying to see everything. Pick two museums and leave the rest.
What to leave for another trip
- The West Coast. San Francisco deserves its own days; our San Francisco in October guide shows why layers matter there.
- National parks. They need driving time and a flexible schedule.
- Florida and the South. Each is a week in itself.
A slower alternative: all seven days in New York
Stay in one hotel and use the week for neighbourhoods, museums and a day or two with no plan. You lose Washington. You gain slower mornings, no packing, and time to repeat what you liked. The tradeoff is that you see one city, however big it is. If you travel in autumn, read New York in October for weather and crowds.
What to verify on official sites
- Entry requirements for your passport, checked on official US government pages well before you book flights.
- Amtrak timetables and your fare rules for your travel date.
- Ferry and entry arrangements for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, which can need advance booking.
- Timed-entry rules for the Smithsonian museums and Capitol tours in Washington.
United States 7 day itinerary FAQ
Can I see New York, Washington and Boston in seven days?
You can, but it gets rushed. Adding Boston means another train day. We would drop it unless you are happy with one full day in each city.
Should I book guided tours in advance?
Helios tours are confirmed on request: you share your date, group size and interests, and the team checks guide availability before quoting. Contact us well ahead of your travel date.
Is a private tour worth it?
It suits families or friends who want their own pace. The shared small-group option, up to 12 guests, follows the same route and costs less per person.
Is the train better than flying between New York and Washington?
For most visitors, yes. It runs from city centre to city centre with no airport transfers, and the journey time is competitive once you count the airport.
