Private or Shared Guided Day in the UK: How to Choose
A plain guide to group size, flexibility, meeting points and the questions to ask before you book a guided day in London and beyond.
The short answer
Choose a shared small group if you are travelling alone or as a couple, the sights are the main point, and you are happy to move at a group's pace. Choose a private day if you have children, anyone who needs a slower pace, a larger party, or an 11-hour day you want to control. Helios runs its three London-based days in both formats: the shared tour is capped at 12 guests, and the private format is just your party, whatever its size.
One point surprises people: for these trips, the shared and private options follow the same route. Private does not mean a different itinerary. You are buying room to set the pace, ask questions and adjust timing, so ask what can change before you pay for it.
Who this is for
This is for travellers weighing a guided day in the United Kingdom against going alone. The three trips below all start and end in London and travel by road, though the Westminster and market days are mostly on foot.
The three days, and which format suits each
Westminster and royal London (3 hours)
The route links Big Ben, the exterior of Westminster Abbey, St James's Park and Buckingham Palace. Westminster and royal London is short, central and crowded around the clock tower and the palace gates. Note that the Abbey is seen from outside only, and admission is not included unless your quote says so. A shared group works well here, because the stops are close together and there is little to customise. Private makes more sense with young children, when you want to stop for photographs, or when someone tires quickly.
Stonehenge and Bath day trip (11 hours)
This is the one where format matters most. The Stonehenge and Bath day trip leaves London, goes west to Stonehenge, then continues to Bath's Roman quarter and the Royal Crescent. Be honest with yourself: it is a long day, with a good part spent on the road. Stonehenge is usually seen from a path around the stones, in company with many other visitors, and entry there normally runs on timed tickets. Admission and transport are not included unless confirmed in your quote. A shared group is fine if you are easygoing. A private day suits anyone who wants flexibility on how long to spend at each stop.
Borough Market food walk (3 hours)
The Borough Market food walk covers the market, Southwark Cathedral, Bankside and local tasting stops. Food is the variable here. Tastings are not included unless confirmed in your quote, and the market is busiest at peak times. If you have allergies or dietary rules, private is easier to adapt, but tell the team in either format before booking.
Group size, flexibility and meeting points
- Group size: up to 12 on shared days. Ask how many are already booked on your date.
- Flexibility: in the private format, the group is only you. That helps with pace and timing, but the route itself is the same as the shared one.
- Meeting point: our trip details do not fix one, so ask for the exact point and time in writing. Helios confirms your guide, access, transport and final price before booking.
Questions to ask any supplier
- Is this shared or private, and what is the maximum group size?
- What exactly is included: admission, transport, food and tastings?
- Where and when do we meet, and where does the day end?
- What happens if it rains, or if a site is closed or sold out?
- Which languages will the guide use? Confirm this rather than assuming.
- Is the final price confirmed before I pay?
What to check on official sites
Before you travel, check the official pages for Stonehenge entry arrangements, Westminster Abbey and Palace visiting rules, Buckingham Palace ceremonies and opening, and Borough Market trading days. These change, and a quote only helps if it matches what is actually open.
FAQ
Is a shared tour worse than a private one?
No. It is the same route with more people. You give up some control over pace in exchange for a lower cost per person.
Can I get a different route on a private tour?
The trip details say both options follow the same route. Tell the team your interests, then ask in writing what they can adjust.
Which day benefits most from going private?
The Stonehenge and Bath day, because at 11 hours the pace matters most.
Are admission and food included?
Not unless your quote confirms them. Admission, transport, food and tastings are listed as not included by default.
