Extra Night in the UK: Edinburgh, Bath or Oxford?

What an extra evening and morning actually unlocks in each city, and which one is worth the journey.

The short answer

If you have one spare night, choose Edinburgh for the most dramatic city and a full morning of sightseeing, Bath for the quietest, prettiest evening, and Oxford if you want the least time on trains. All three reward an overnight stay because day-trippers leave by late afternoon, and the streets feel different afterwards.

The catch is distance. Edinburgh is a long way from southern England, so it only suits an extra night if you are happy to spend a large part of a day getting there. Bath and Oxford are both comfortable from London.

Who this is for

This is for travellers with a fixed base, often London, a flight home, or a larger tour, who have one night to add. It is not a full itinerary. It compares what the evening and the next morning give you.

Edinburgh: the biggest payoff, the biggest journey

Getting there from London takes several hours by train, or a short flight plus airport time. Count on the travel eating most of one day. In return, you get a compact Old Town that you can see properly across an evening and a morning.

Arrive for the evening and the Royal Mile is livelier and less hurried than at midday. The next morning, you can take on the castle before the tour groups build up. In summer the light lasts late. In winter it is dark by mid-afternoon, so the evening is for pubs and lit streets rather than views.

Helios runs three-hour guided walks that start and end in Edinburgh, by road, each as a small shared group of up to 12 guests or as a private tour for your party:
