United Kingdom 7 Day Itinerary: London, Bath and Edinburgh

What fits into a week, what the travel days cost you, and what to save for a second trip.

The short answer: London, Bath and Edinburgh

In seven days, the plan that works is London for four nights with one day trip, then Edinburgh for two nights. Anything more turns the week into a series of stations. Wales, the Lake District, the Highlands, Cornwall and Northern Ireland are all worth visiting, but none fits here without cutting something you would regret losing.

This plan suits first-time visitors who want the big names and are happy to spend a day on a train. If you dislike moving hotels, skip to the slower alternative below.

The route, day by day

Days 1 to 3: London

Spend the first day on Westminster and royal London: Big Ben, the outside of Westminster Abbey, St James's Park and Buckingham Palace. It is a compact walk, and it is crowded at almost any hour. A guided version, the Westminster and royal London walk, takes about three hours. It covers the abbey from the outside only, so museum or interior visits need separate time and tickets.

On day two, cross the river to Southwark. Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral and Bankside fit naturally into a morning or lunchtime. The Borough Market food walk runs about three hours. Go hungry, and expect busy aisles at midday on weekends.

Keep day three free for a museum, a river walk or simply recovering. Jet lag usually decides this for you.

Day 4: Stonehenge and Bath

This is the one long day out of London. The Stonehenge and Bath day trip leaves London and returns there, travelling by road, and takes about 11 hours. You see Stonehenge, then Bath's Roman quarter and the Royal Crescent.

Be realistic about Stonehenge. You walk a path around the stones rather than among them, and you will likely have little time there. Bath is the more relaxed half of the day, with honey-coloured streets and the Roman remains. It is a lot of sitting in a vehicle for two stops.

Day 5: the travel day to Edinburgh

London to Edinburgh by direct train takes a little over four hours. Flying is quicker in the air but not necessarily door to door once airports are counted. Book the morning train, check in at your hotel, and treat the afternoon as a gentle first look at the Royal Mile and the Old Town.

Days 6 and 7: Edinburgh

Day six is Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile down to Holyroodhouse, and, if the weather allows, a climb up Arthur's Seat. Scottish weather changes fast, so bring a waterproof whatever the season. On day seven you have a morning at most before heading home.

Practical timing and transport

  • Moving hotels twice is the limit. This plan has one move, and that is already a lost half-day.
  • Helios trips in this article are London-based. Each starts and ends in London, so the Edinburgh leg is yours to arrange independently.
  • Formats: each of the three London trips runs as a small shared group (up to 12 guests) or as a private tour for your party. The route is the same in both.
  • Confirm before booking: our team confirms your guide, access, transport and final price. Admission, transport, food and tastings are not included unless your quote says so.

The slower alternative: London only, with Bath

Drop Edinburgh and keep London for six nights, with the Stonehenge and Bath day trip in the middle. You gain unhurried days, a single hotel and room for museums, markets and a spare weather day.

The tradeoff is plain: you see England, not Britain. Scotland waits for another trip, and London on its own can feel expensive and busy by day five.

What to verify on official sites before you go

  • Train timetables and tickets for London to Edinburgh, which are usually cheaper well ahead.
  • Stonehenge entry, which is normally by timed ticket, so check that slots are available on your date.
  • Opening days for the Roman Baths, Edinburgh Castle and any royal residence you want to enter. Buckingham Palace interiors are open only in certain periods.
  • Any strikes or engineering works affecting rail and the Underground.

FAQ

Is seven days enough for the United Kingdom?

It is enough for a taste of two places, not the whole country. London plus one other city, or London plus day trips, is the sensible limit.

Should I do Edinburgh or stay in London?

Choose Edinburgh if you want a different landscape and are comfortable with a half-lost travel day. Stay in London if you prefer a slower week.

Is the Stonehenge and Bath day trip private?

It runs in two formats: a small shared group of up to 12 guests, or a private tour for your party. Pick whichever suits your group.

Are admissions included in Helios trips?

Not by default. Admission, transport, food and tastings are included only if confirmed in your quote.
