Turkey 7 Day Itinerary: What Fits and What to Leave for Later

Three bases are the practical limit for a week: Istanbul, Cappadocia and a short stop at Ephesus.

Turkey 7 Day Itinerary: What Fits and What to Leave for Later

The short answer

Seven days in Turkey fits Istanbul, Cappadocia and a brief stop at Ephesus, linked by two domestic flights. It does not fit the Turkish coast, the east, Pamukkale and Troy as well. Turkey is large, and every extra base costs you half a day in airports and transfers. If you want more than a rush past the highlights, drop Ephesus and spend the week on Istanbul and Cappadocia alone.

Who this is for

First-time visitors who want Ottoman and Byzantine history, a landscape day or two, and one ancient site. It suits you if you are happy to fly twice and start early on some mornings. It does not suit you if you dislike moving hotels, because this plan has three bases in seven days.

The route, day by day

  1. Day 1, Istanbul: arrive and settle in the old city around Sultanahmet. Keep the evening light.
  2. Day 2, Istanbul: the old city. Our Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia guided tour starts at 09:00 or 13:30, is a shared small group of up to 12 guests, and runs about three hours. Spend the rest of the day on the Basilica Cistern or the bazaars.
  3. Day 3, Istanbul: the Topkapi Palace and Harem tour also starts at 09:00 or 13:30, with up to 12 guests in a shared group. In the evening, the Bosphorus dinner cruise is a three-hour shared tour with up to 15 guests. It is a large, lively boat with a night show, not a quiet one.
  4. Day 4, to Cappadocia: fly in, then transfer by road to Göreme or Uçhisar. Expect the day to be mostly travel, with a viewpoint at sunset.
  5. Day 5, Cappadocia: valleys, rock-cut churches and the open-air museum. A balloon flight means a pre-dawn start and depends on the weather, so do not plan the whole trip around it.
  6. Day 6, to the Aegean: fly to Izmir, often with a connection, then continue to Selçuk. This is a travel day.
  7. Day 7, Ephesus: go early, before the heat and the cruise-ship crowds, then head to Izmir for your onward flight.

Helios tours in this plan are the three Istanbul ones above. The flights, hotels and the Cappadocia and Ephesus days you arrange yourself.

Practical timing and transport

Book the domestic flights first, because they fix everything else. Allow generous margins on the day-6 connection and the day-7 departure. Cappadocia's airports are a transfer away from the villages, so the day you arrive is not a sightseeing day.

In Istanbul, tour start times and the order of the days matter more than the sights. Do not stack two morning tours on one day: both start at 09:00 or 13:30, so you can do one in the morning and the other in the afternoon only if you accept a very full day. We would not. For getting around the city, see our Istanbul transport guide. For timing by season, read the month-by-month guide.

What to leave for another trip

  • Pamukkale: a long detour from Ephesus. In a week it eats a day for a short visit.
  • The Turquoise Coast and Antalya: a beach holiday of its own.
  • Troy and Gallipoli: meaningful, but they need a full day each from Istanbul.
  • The east and the Black Sea: too far for this week.

The slower alternative: Istanbul and Cappadocia only

Take four nights in Istanbul and three in Cappadocia, with one flight each way. You gain time for the Asian side, a ferry ride and a second Cappadocia valley day. You lose Ephesus entirely, which many travellers will happily trade for fewer airport mornings. If a balloon flight is cancelled, you also have a spare day.

What to verify on official sites

  • Entry or e-visa rules for your passport, on the Turkish government's official portal.
  • Opening days and ticket rules for Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia and Ephesus, which change and include weekly closing days.
  • Domestic flight schedules and baggage rules with the airlines.
  • Prayer-time restrictions for mosque visits, and dress guidance, before you go.

FAQ: Turkey in seven days

Is seven days enough for Turkey?

It is enough for a good first taste of two or three places. It is not enough to see the country, so choose a short route rather than more stops.

Should I include Ephesus?

Only if you accept an early start and a connecting flight. If that sounds tiring, use the extra time in Istanbul and Cappadocia instead.

Are the Istanbul tours private?

No. The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia tour and the Topkapi tour are shared small groups of up to 12 guests, and the Bosphorus dinner cruise is a shared small group of up to 15.

How many days should I give Istanbul?

Three nights covers the main sights without rushing. Our 3 days in Istanbul itinerary shows how to pace them.
