Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka Transport: Shinkansen, Trains, Flights
The Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka corridor is easy to travel, but the order, the stations and the luggage rules shape the days.
The short answer
For most travellers, the best Tokyo Kyoto Osaka transport is the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto, then a local or rapid train on to Osaka. Kyoto and Osaka are close, so you do not need a separate long journey between them. Flights and night buses exist, but they rarely save time or effort on this corridor.
This guide is for first-time visitors linking the three cities by public transport, and for anyone deciding whether to use a rail pass, fly or book a night bus. Treat every time below as approximate. Timetables, fares and pass rules change, so check them before you commit.
The route in the order you meet it
Going west from Tokyo, the Shinkansen leaves from Tokyo Station, stops at Shinagawa and Shin-Yokohama, and then runs through Nagoya to Kyoto. Shin-Osaka comes a short hop after Kyoto. The fastest services take a little over two hours to Kyoto. The slower services that stop more often take noticeably longer.
If the weather is clear, Mount Fuji shows on the right-hand side of the train going west. Book a window seat on that side if you care. Do not plan your day around it, because cloud often hides the mountain.
Your options compared
| Option | Typical time | Best for | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shinkansen, Tokyo to Kyoto | About 2 to 2.5 hours | Almost everyone | Luggage rules; reserve seats in busy periods |
| Local or rapid train, Kyoto to Osaka | Roughly half an hour | Day trips either way | Osaka has several major stations |
| Shinkansen, Kyoto to Shin-Osaka | Very short | Reaching the Shin-Osaka area quickly | Shin-Osaka is not the Osaka city-centre station |
| Domestic flight | About an hour in the air | Rare cases, such as an awkward airport pairing | Airport transfers and check-in cancel the saving |
| Night bus | Overnight | Tight budgets | You arrive tired, and Kyoto hotels will not let you in early |
Connection points that trip people up
Osaka has more than one hub. Shin-Osaka is the Shinkansen station. Osaka Station and the Umeda district are a short train ride away, and the Namba area for food and nightlife is further south. Know which area your hotel is in before choosing your train.
Kyoto Station is large and busy, with Shinkansen, JR and subway lines under one roof. Allow extra time for your first transfer.
Luggage matters too. Large suitcases on the Shinkansen need a reserved seat with space behind it, under rules that have applied since 2020. Many travellers instead use a luggage-forwarding service to send big bags ahead and carry a small overnight bag.
What a sensible order looks like
Fly into one end and out of the other if your flights allow it: Tokyo first, then Kyoto, then Osaka with its airport links. This avoids backtracking. Base yourself in Kyoto and day-trip to Osaka if you prefer to unpack only once.

FAQ
Is it worth flying between Tokyo and Osaka?
Usually not. Once you add airport transfers and check-in, the Shinkansen from city centre to city centre is generally as fast and simpler. Flying makes sense mainly when your international flights use airports that suit it.
Can I visit Osaka as a day trip from Kyoto?
Yes. The trains are frequent and short, so many travellers stay in Kyoto and visit Osaka for an afternoon and evening.
Do I need to book Shinkansen seats in advance?
Not always, but reserving is wise in busy travel periods, and you need a reservation if you want to bring oversized luggage. Check the operator's current rules.
