Quad, jeep or buggy — which desert safari to book

Four vehicles sold as one afternoon. The difference between the best day of the holiday and four hours of eating dust.

The desert behind Hurghada is sold four ways — quad, buggy, jeep and camel — usually bundled together into one afternoon and described identically by everyone selling it. The vehicles are genuinely different, and picking the wrong one is the difference between the best afternoon of the holiday and four hours of eating dust.

What the desert here actually is

This is the Eastern Desert, and it is not the Sahara of the postcards. No rolling dunes: this is a hard, stony, mountainous landscape of gravel plains and dry wadis running back towards the Red Sea Hills. It is bleaker than people expect and considerably more dramatic, particularly in the last hour of light.

It is also genuinely inhabited. The Ababda and Bishari people have lived along these wadis for a very long time, and the "Bedouin village" on your itinerary is a real settlement that has adapted to receiving visitors — an arrangement worth going into clear-eyed rather than either cynical or credulous.

Quad bike

The default, and the cheapest. You ride your own automatic quad in a convoy behind a guide, on a graded track.

Good: easy to learn in five minutes, no licence needed, genuinely fun, and the one everyone can do.

Bad: the convoy is the whole experience. You follow the machine in front at its pace, and if you are not near the front you spend the ride inside its dust cloud. Ask to be placed near the front, and mean it — this single request changes the trip more than anything else you can do.

Book it if you want the standard desert afternoon at the standard price, and you are happy in a group.

Dune buggy

A two-seater cage with a roll bar, a steering wheel and pedals. You drive it like a car.

Good: far more comfortable than a quad, much less dust in your face, and two people ride together — which matters if one of you would rather not drive. Available as a private trip, which removes the convoy problem entirely.

Bad: the most expensive of the four by some distance.

Book it if you are a couple, you want to talk to each other during the ride, or you tried a quad once and hated the dust. The private version is the single best desert product on this coast.

Jeep 4×4

You are a passenger. A driver takes six or seven people across the plain in an open or hard-topped 4×4.

Good: no dust in your face, no skill required, no age limit in practice, shade, and you can actually look at the landscape instead of at the vehicle in front. The only option that works for people who cannot ride.

Bad: passive. If you wanted to drive something, this is not it.

Book it if you are travelling with children, older relatives, or anyone with a back that will not enjoy being bounced on a quad for an hour. It is also the sensible choice for the Ghost City run out to the abandoned mining town at Umm Huwaytat, where the distance is the point.

Camel

Almost always a fifteen-minute add-on rather than a trip, and it is worth being realistic: it is a short ride on a led animal, for the photograph and the experience of the gait, which is stranger than people expect. Nobody is crossing a desert. Taken on those terms it is a pleasant ten minutes; expected to be a journey, it disappoints.

Timing: this matters more than the vehicle

Most safaris run either mid-morning or late afternoon, and they are not the same trip.

The sunset run is the one to book. You ride in falling light, reach the village or the dinner camp as the sun goes down behind the hills, and eat in the dark. The desert at that hour is genuinely beautiful in a way it is not at eleven in the morning, when it is flat, glaring and hot.

There is also a stargazing version that stays out after dinner. Away from Hurghada's light the sky here is exceptionally dark, and on a moonless night the Milky Way is plainly visible. If you have one desert evening, this is the one that people remember. Bring a jacket — the temperature drops hard after dark, and in December it is properly cold.

Practical notes, several of which are safety

Wear a helmet and use the goggles or scarf. They are provided for a reason: the dust is fine, constant, and it will find your eyes.
Closed shoes and long sleeves. Exhausts are hot, gravel is sharp, and the sun is on you the whole way out.
Do not leave the convoy line. Riding wide to escape the dust is how collisions happen, and the ground off the track is not what it looks like.
Ask about the age minimum if children are riding. Rules vary by operator and it is worth confirming before you arrive.
Leave anything you cannot replace at the hotel. Dust gets into cameras and phones. If you take a phone, take a bag for it.
Contact lenses are a bad idea. Take glasses instead.
Water. You will not notice sweating in dry heat with a wind on you, which is exactly why people get caught out.

What the afternoon actually contains

Almost every safari, whatever the vehicle, is built from the same four blocks. Knowing which ones you care about tells you what to ask for.

The ride out. Forty minutes to an hour of driving across the plain. This is the part you are paying for and the part the vehicle choice decides.
The village stop. Twenty to thirty minutes: tea, a look at how people live out here, usually a camel, usually a shop. Some operators make this genuine and unhurried; others make it a sales stop. Ask which you are getting.
The viewpoint. A high point for the sunset, if you booked the afternoon departure. Short, and the reason to book that departure.
Dinner and a show. A camp with a buffet, often with music and a fire. Quality varies enormously and it is the block most worth asking about — some are lovely, some are a coach park with a PA system.

If what you want is the driving, book a private trip and ask to cut the camp short. If what you want is the desert at night, book the stargazing version and treat the ride as the way in. Very few people want all four blocks equally, and the trips are flexible if you say so when booking rather than on the day.

Standard afternoon, standard budget — quad, and ask to ride near the front.

A couple, or you hate dust — a private buggy. It is the best version of this day.

Children, older travellers, or a bad back — jeep.

One desert evening only — whichever vehicle, take the sunset departure and add the stargazing.
