Private boat or group boat — what the extra money buys

On a beach day, nothing much. On a reef day, it is the biggest upgrade available in Hurghada.

Almost every boat trip in Hurghada is sold in two versions, and the price gap looks like a luxury upgrade. It is not. On a snorkelling day, private and group are two different products wearing the same name.

Here is what the money actually buys, and — more usefully — when it buys nothing worth having.

What a group boat actually is

A large motor boat carrying thirty to forty people, running a fixed circuit that leaves and returns at the same time every day. The crew are usually excellent. The constraints are structural rather than anyone's fault:

  • One ladder. Forty people entering and leaving the water through a single ladder is the bottleneck that defines the day.
  • One schedule. Everybody swims when the whistle goes and stops when it goes again, regardless of whether you were in the middle of something.
  • One lunch sitting, at a fixed time.
  • Fixed sites. If the reef is crowded or the wind has come up, the boat stays anyway.
  • A long pick-up run. The bus collects six or seven hotels before the marina, so your day starts earlier and ends later than the boat's.

None of that ruins a beach day. All of it matters on a reef day.

What a private boat actually is

A speedboat or small cruiser with your party on it and nobody else. The differences that count are not the towels and the fruit platter:

  • You arrive first. This is the big one. A reef with two people over it and the same reef with sixty are not the same reef — the fish behave differently, the visibility is better before fins stir the sand, and the light is better early.
  • You can move. If a site is busy or the wind picks up, the boat goes somewhere else. On a group boat that decision was made last week.
  • You get more water time. No ladder queue means the same eight-hour day contains substantially more swimming.
  • You choose the shape of the day. Three reef stops and a short beach, or the reverse. Lunch at one o'clock or three.
  • Shorter transit. A speedboat reaches Giftun in a fraction of the time a group boat takes, which is time back in the water.
