James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay by Big Boat from Phuket
What the 10-hour big boat and canoe day involves, what is worth your time, and what to sort out before you go.
If you want to see Phang Nga Bay without a fast, bumpy speedboat, the big boat is the sensible choice. It suits families and anyone who prefers a steady deck, and it includes real paddling. The Helios James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay trip is a 10-hour day by road and boat, from Phuket back to Phuket, on a two-deck boat.
The caveats: it is a long day, James Bond Island itself is the busiest and least peaceful stop, and the Helios format is a shared small-group tour for up to 15 guests, not a private charter. The best moments are the canoe stops, not the famous rock.
How the day unfolds
Hotel pickup and Ao Po Pier
A van collects you from your hotel and drives to Ao Po Pier on Phuket's north-east side, about 1 hour 15 minutes by the itinerary. At the pier you get a welcome drink and a safety briefing before boarding. Life jackets are included.
Ko Panak: the first canoes
You switch to canoes for about an hour around the limestone walls of Ko Panak and through its caves. This is where the bay stops being scenery and becomes something you are inside.
Ko Hong: the lagoons
Another hour of canoeing, this time through cave channels into the lagoons enclosed within the island. Cliffs rise on every side and the sky becomes a ring overhead. Expect other groups. Cave access in Phang Nga Bay depends on the tide, so the exact route on the day is the crew's call.
Lunch on board
The buffet lunch is served for about an hour while the boat crosses the bay. Drinks are included. This is the quiet part of the day, with the limestone towers sliding past from the upper deck.
James Bond Island
The last stop is about an hour ashore on Khao Phing Kan, with the view across to Ko Tapu, the needle of rock from The Man with the Golden Gun. You look at Ko Tapu from across the water; it is not somewhere you walk onto. Be realistic: the viewing area is small, many boats arrive at once, and souvenir stalls line the shore. Take your photo, walk the beach, and treat it as a pleasant finale rather than the highlight.
Return to Phuket
The boat returns to Ao Po Pier, then the van takes you to your hotel, about 1.5 hours in total.
Why 10 hours when the stops add up to less
The timed stops in the itinerary add up to well under 10 hours. The rest is sailing between the islands and waiting for the group to move together. Ask for your exact pickup time when you book, so you can plan breakfast and the evening.
Practical preparation
- Pickup areas: hotel transfers cover most of Phuket, but not Nai Thon, Nai Yang, Mai Khao, Cape Panwa, Makham Bay, Ko Sirey, Layan or Coconut Island. Staying there means arranging your own way to the pier.
- National park fee: it is not included and is paid on the day. Adults and children pay different rates.
- Tips: not included.
- What to bring: sun protection, a hat, a swimsuit and a dry change of clothes. Our Thailand packing guide covers the rest.
Season and weather
Rain and rough seas can change or cancel boat days in Phang Nga Bay. If you are travelling in the wetter months, read Phuket in October: will boat trips run? and the best time to visit Thailand.
Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
Families will like the roomy, steady boat; see our wider notes on Thailand with kids. If you want a longer, more detailed breakdown of the stops, see what the day is really like.
