Private or Shared Guided Day in the Philippines: How to Choose
On Boracay, Helios's boat and reef days are all small-group shared tours, so the useful question is what a shared day will and will not flex on.
If you are weighing private against shared for a guided day on Boracay, here is the plain answer: all three Helios trips there are booked as small-group shared tours, up to 15 guests. None of them is listed in a private format. So the choice is less about private versus shared and more about whether a shared boat suits how you like to spend a day. For most people snorkelling, paddling or walking on a reef, it does.
Who this is for
This is for travellers who have already decided on Boracay and want a guide, a boat and a plan, without negotiating with boatmen on the beach. If you need your own schedule, a private charter, or a pickup from your hotel, a Helios shared tour will frustrate you. Hotel pickup and drop-off is not included on any of the three.
The three shared days compared
| Trip | Format | Time on the water | Where you meet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Island-hopping boat tour with snorkeling and lunch | Shared, up to 15 | About 4 hours | Near Boat Station 1, White Beach |
| Sunset cruise with snorkeling, paddleboard and kayak | Shared, up to 15 | About 2 hours, 15:30 start | White Beach |
| Helmet diving reef walk with photos and videos | Shared, up to 15 | About 15 minutes underwater, plus a short speedboat ride and briefing | Boat Station 1, White Beach |
What shared means in practice
You share the boat, the pace and the stops. On the four-hour island-hopping tour the order is fixed: Puka Shell Beach at the northern end, the Coral Garden for snorkelling, Crocodile Island, then optional landings on Magic Island and Crystal Cove. Your flexibility is limited to those optional landings, which charge their own entrance fees, so you can stay on the boat if you prefer.
On the sunset cruise you cannot move the sunset, and the boat stays out until the light fades. The upside of shared is that other people are there to take photos with, and the guide runs a tight, tested routine.
Group size and what up to 15 feels like
Up to 15 is a ceiling, not a promise of 15. It is small enough that a guide can brief everyone and count heads in the water. It is not intimate: expect to wait your turn for a paddleboard or a photo with the mermaid tail. If you are nervous in the water, tell the guide at the start.
Practical timing and transport
All three tours travel by road in the listing sense: you get yourself to White Beach, and the day starts there. Allow time to find the right station, especially on a busy beach. Bring pesos in cash for the island-hopping fees (snorkelling, plus the optional landings), as they are paid on the spot. The sunset cruise includes no food or drink, so carry water.
Boat days depend on the sea. The wind and swell change through the year, so read our guides to Boracay in November and island tours in the typhoon months before you fix a date. For the wider picture, see the month-by-month guide to the Philippines.
Questions to ask any supplier, including us
- Is this booked as shared or private, and what is the maximum group size?
- Where exactly do we meet, and what time should we arrive?
- What is not included, and which fees are paid in cash on the day?
- Is hotel pickup included, or do I make my own way?
- What happens if the weather stops boats running?
- Are there age, health or waiver requirements?
Check the booking format on the trip page itself, because that list is the final word on private versus shared. Older wording elsewhere can disagree.
Honest limits
The helmet reef walk is brief: about 15 minutes on the sea floor, with the rest of the time spent on the boat ride and briefing. The minimum age is 13, and 13 to 17 year olds need an adult to sign the waiver. Do not fly for 24 hours afterwards, and guests aged 60 and over need medical clearance, which is not included. The island-hopping tour has no snorkel tube or fins included, only a mask.

FAQ
Does Helios offer private tours on Boracay?
Not for these three. Each is listed only as a small-group shared tour for up to 15 guests. If you need a private boat, check the trip pages for any new format before you book.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. On all three Boracay tours you make your own way to White Beach, to Boat Station 1 or the boarding area your guide confirms.
Which shared tour is best for a first-timer?
The island-hopping tour covers the most ground, with snorkelling, a beach, and lunch. The sunset cruise is more relaxed and active in the water. The helmet walk suits anyone who wants to see the reef without swimming.
Do I need cash?
Yes, for the island-hopping tour. The snorkelling fee and the optional island landings are paid on the spot in pesos.
