Overnight Desert Camp in Dubai: What a Night in the Dunes Involves
The tent, the evening, the stars, the sunrise and how cold it gets, season by season
Most visitors see the Dubai desert for a few hours: a dune drive, a camel ride, dinner at a camp and back to the hotel before midnight. An overnight desert safari keeps you out there until the next morning. That changes more than the length of the trip. You get the camp after the shows have finished, a sky with far less city light in it, and the dunes in the low, soft light of sunrise, when the sand is still cool. This guide explains how a night at a desert camp near Dubai actually runs, where you sleep, what the stars and the sunrise are like, how cold the desert gets in each season, what to pack, and who will enjoy it and who will not.
How an overnight safari differs from an evening safari
An evening desert safari, such as our Dubai Red Dunes Safari and BBQ Evening, gives you the dune drive, the camel ride, the buffet and the shows, and brings you back the same night. The overnight version starts the same way, but instead of climbing back into the car after dinner you stay. The second half of the experience is the part most people never see: a camel ride in the dark, a campfire, a few hours of sleep in your own tent and a camel walk at sunrise before breakfast.
Our Dubai Overnight Desert Camp and Sunrise lasts about 17 hours from pickup to drop-off. It is a long stretch, but it is not tiring in the way a day of sightseeing is. Much of the evening is spent sitting, eating and watching, and the night is yours to sleep.
The afternoon and evening: from the dunes to the camp
Pickup is at 13:45 from your hotel. You travel by 4x4, and once you reach the desert your driver spends 30 to 45 minutes on the dunes. The drive is bumpy and fast in places, which is the point of it, but it is also the reason the trip is not suitable for everyone (more on that below). After the dune drive there is a stop for sandboarding, where you slide down a slope on a board, sitting or standing as you prefer.
At the camp you settle into your tent and are welcomed with coffee, dates and sweets. Before the light goes, there is a camel ride at sunset. Henna is offered for women, there is shisha, and you can take photos with a falcon.
Dinner is a buffet with three cuisines and a barbecue. During and after the meal there are live shows: a fire show, a horse show, a camel show and a Yola dance, a traditional Emirati performance with wooden rifles that are spun and thrown. Unlimited water and soft drinks are included throughout the stay. Alcohol is not permitted at the camp, so plan accordingly if that matters to you.

Where you sleep: the tent
The question we are asked most about desert camping in Dubai is what the sleeping arrangement really is. On this trip you have a private, air-conditioned tent. There are showers at the camp, and towels, toiletries and slippers are provided. Wi-Fi is available, and a basket of seasonal fruit is included.
That makes it comfortable rather than rugged. You are not pitching a tent or sleeping on the sand in a sleeping bag; you are staying at an organised camp with staff, electricity and other guests. If your idea of a night in the desert is solitude far from anyone, this is not that. If you want the desert at night without giving up a proper bed, a shower and cooling in the warmer months, it is a good fit.
Because towels and toiletries are supplied, there is no need to bring much. Large suitcases stay at your hotel; a small bag with a change of clothes, any medicines you need and a phone charger is enough.
