Private or Shared Guided Day in Mexico: How to Choose

Group size, pace, meeting points and the questions to ask before you book a guided day in Mexico City.

Short answer: for a short city walk or a market tour, a small shared group is usually enough. For the long Teotihuacan day, or if your party is large, includes children or has mobility needs, a private format is worth considering. Helios runs all three Mexico City days below in both formats: a shared small group of up to 12 guests, or a private tour for just your party.

One honest point first. Helios says the group and private options follow the same route. Private does not mean a different itinerary. It means you are not sharing the guide, and that your party sets the mood of the day. Ask exactly what can be adjusted before you pay for it.

Who this is for

This is for travellers choosing between formats on a first visit to Mexico City. If you are comparing departures with strangers against a private guide, the questions below apply to any supplier, not only us.

The three days and how each suits a format

Historic centre: shared works well

The Mexico City historic centre walk takes 3 hours. It links the Zócalo, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Templo Mayor exterior and the Palacio de Bellas Artes. The stops are close together and the commentary is the same either way, so a small group costs you little. Expect to stop often and wait for the group to gather. Note that it covers the Templo Mayor exterior only. Admission is not included unless confirmed in your quote.

Street food and markets: shared is lively, private is easier

The street food and markets tour also takes 3 hours. It runs through Mercado de San Juan, the historic centre, taco stops and local sweets. A shared group suits adventurous eaters who want company. Choose private if anyone has allergies, dietary rules or a low tolerance for chilli. A guide can plan around your party far more easily than around twelve strangers. Food and tastings are not included unless your quote confirms them.

Teotihuacan: the day where private matters most

The Teotihuacan pyramids day trip is 7 hours by road from Mexico City. It covers the Avenue of the Dead, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. The site is large, open and has little shade. The altitude is high, so you tire faster than you expect. On a long day, a group moves at the pace of its slowest member and a private party sets its own. That is the real reason to pay for private here, not any change in route.

Group size, flexibility and meeting points

  • Group size: shared tours here are capped at 12 guests. Ask how many are already booked for your date.
  • Flexibility: ask what a private booking lets you change, such as start time, pace or extra stops, and get it in writing.
  • Meeting point: all three tours start and end in Mexico City, but we have not published a fixed meeting point. Ask for the exact place and time in your quote.

Timing and transport

All three tours travel by road. Transport is not included unless your quote confirms it, so check whether you are meeting at a point or being collected, and how you get home. For the Teotihuacan day, plan for the whole day and avoid tight evening commitments. The rainy season brings afternoon showers, so a morning start can help with weather and heat.

Questions to ask any supplier

  1. Is this shared or private, and what is the maximum group size?
  2. What exactly is in the quote: guide, admission, transport, food, tastings?
  3. Where and when do we meet, and what happens if someone is late?
  4. Which languages does the guide speak? Ask for the one you need rather than assuming.
  5. What is the cancellation policy, and what happens if the minimum group is not reached?

What to verify before you go

Check opening days on the official sites, as many museums close one day a week and rules at archaeological sites change. Confirm whether climbing is currently permitted at Teotihuacan, and whether any Templo Mayor museum entry is wanted. We confirm your guide, access, transport and final price before booking, so use that step to settle every point above.

Mexico private shared tours FAQ

Is the route different on a private tour?

No. Helios states that the group and private options follow the same route. The difference is who you share the guide with.

How big is a shared group?

Shared tours take up to 12 guests.

Is admission included?

Not unless your quote confirms it. Admission, transport, food and tastings are listed as not included by default.

Which tour benefits most from going private?

The 7-hour Teotihuacan day, because pace, heat and altitude matter most on a long day outdoors.

How do I get an exact price?

Send your date, group size and interests. Our team checks local guide availability and returns a precise plan and quote.
