Mexico Five-City Itinerary: Mexico City to Puerto Vallarta
A realistic way to link Mexico City, Oaxaca, Mérida, Cancún and Puerto Vallarta, with flights, rail, roads and day trips sorted.
Who this route is for
Can you do Mexico City, Cancún, Oaxaca, Mérida and Puerto Vallarta in one trip? Yes, but only with about 12 to 14 days and a willingness to fly. With fewer than ten days you will spend more time in airports than in the places. If you have a week, pick two or three of the five.
The route suits travellers who want highlands, ruins, Oaxacan food, Yucatán colonial streets and a beach finish, and who accept that the distances are large.
The order that works
Mexico City is the natural gateway, and Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast is a good place to end. The Yucatán pair sits in the middle.
| Stop | Suggested stay | How you get there |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico City | 3 nights | International flight |
| Oaxaca | 3 nights | Short flight; the road takes most of a day |
| Mérida | 2 to 3 nights | Flight, usually connecting through Mexico City |
| Cancún | 1 to 2 nights | Road, bus or rail across the Yucatán; some flights |
| Puerto Vallarta | 3 nights | Flight, direct or connecting, to finish on the coast |
Oaxaca and Mérida are not directly linked in any convenient way, so expect a connection and a travel day. Cancún to Mérida is the one leg where road or rail makes sense. Check current schedules for the Tren Maya and long-distance buses rather than relying on an old guidebook.
Flying, rail, road or boat
Fly for Mexico City to Oaxaca, Oaxaca to Mérida and Cancún to Puerto Vallarta. Rail or road suits Mérida to Cancún, which you can see from the window. Drive only if you enjoy long highway days; mountain roads to Oaxaca are slow and not a saving. Boats are for day outings, such as the coast around Cancún or Banderas Bay at Puerto Vallarta, not for getting between the five cities.
Day visit or overnight?
Be clear about which side trips are a long day and which deserve a night.
- Mexico City: the centre and Teotihuacan both work as day visits from a city base.
- Yucatán: Chichén Itzá can be a day trip, but it is a long one. If you are already in Mérida, an overnight in Valladolid or the area may be gentler.
- Oaxaca and Puerto Vallarta: these are better as bases for several days than as single stops.
Where Helios fits
Our tours here start in Mexico City and Cancún. They cover only the places named in each itinerary, and none of them starts in Oaxaca, Mérida or Puerto Vallarta. All three run as a small group (shared, up to 12 guests) or as a private tour for your own party. We confirm your guide, access, transport and final price before you book.
The Mexico City historic centre walk takes about 3 hours by road. It links Zócalo, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the exterior of Templo Mayor and Palacio de Bellas Artes. Expect an exterior view of Templo Mayor, not the interior.
The Teotihuacan pyramids day trip runs about 7 hours from Mexico City. It follows the Avenue of the Dead to the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. There is little shade on site, so plan for sun and some climbing.
The Chichén Itzá and Valladolid tour is about 12 hours by road from Cancún. It includes Chichén Itzá, Valladolid and a Yucatán cenote. Expect an early start, heat and crowds at the main ruins. Admission, transport and food are not included unless confirmed in your quote.
If you want a guide based in Oaxaca, Mérida or Puerto Vallarta, send us an enquiry with your dates, group size and interests. We will check local availability and come back with a plan and quote.
When to go and what to verify
The drier months, roughly November to April, are the most comfortable. The wet season brings afternoon storms, and hurricane season affects both coasts. Mérida and the Yucatán are very hot before the rains. Mexico City sits at altitude, so take the first day easily. Oaxaca fills up around the Day of the Dead, so book early.
Before you commit, check these on official sources:
- Archaeological site hours and closures (INAH) for Teotihuacan and Chichén Itzá.
- Opening days and current exhibitions at Palacio de Bellas Artes and Templo Mayor.
- Airline schedules and connections, plus Tren Maya and bus timetables.
- Events that close streets around the Zócalo.
- Entry requirements for your passport.
FAQ
How many days do I need for these five cities?
Plan 12 to 14 days. Ten is possible if you shorten each stay and accept more travel time.
Should I fly or take the train between cities?
Fly the long legs. Rail and road are worth considering only across the Yucatán, between Mérida and Cancún.
Is Chichén Itzá better as a day trip or an overnight?
The Helios tour from Cancún is a 12-hour day by road. If you can spare a night in the Valladolid or Mérida area, the experience is calmer. Ask us if you would like help planning it.
Are Helios tours private?
The three tours above run in two formats: a small group of up to 12 guests, or a private tour for your own party. Tell us which you prefer when you enquire.
