Istanbul Old City Day Tour with Sunset Bosphorus Cruise

A 10-hour small-group day from Hagia Sophia to the Golden Horn and out onto the Bosphorus, with an honest look at what it covers and what it leaves out.

Istanbul Old City Day Tour with Sunset Bosphorus Cruise

Short answer: the Istanbul Old City Day Tour with Sunset Bosphorus Cruise suits first-time visitors who want the big sights of the historic peninsula, a quieter stretch of the Golden Horn and an evening on the water, with someone else handling the logistics. It does not suit anyone who wants to spend hours inside a single museum. It is a 10-hour day, it runs as a shared small-group tour of up to 20 guests, and the Hagia Sophia entry ticket is not included.

The day, in the order you meet it

Your pickup is from your hotel in central Istanbul at about 08:20, and you travel by coach with your guide for the whole day.

Sultanahmet: Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque

You start in the old centre. At Hagia Sophia (about an hour) your guide explains the building's long history. Going inside needs a separate ticket, which you buy there. If you would rather not queue or pay, you can still hear the story outside. For rules and planning, see our Hagia Sophia visitor guide.

The Blue Mosque (about 45 minutes) is next. You visit the mosque and its prayer hall, and entry is free. It is a working mosque, so expect shoes off, covered shoulders and knees, and a short wait or a change of order if prayer is under way. Our Blue Mosque guide covers etiquette in detail.

Süleymaniye, then Balat and Fener

The coach then climbs to the Süleymaniye Mosque (about 45 minutes), the great Ottoman mosque on its hill above the Golden Horn. It is usually calmer than Sultanahmet, and the courtyard gives you a view across the water.

Next come Balat and Fener (about 1 hour 15 minutes), old quarters of steep, colourful streets. This is the part of the day that feels like a neighbourhood rather than a monument, and it is a walk, not a drive-past. Then the Bulgarian Church of St Stephen (about 30 minutes), a church on the Golden Horn built of cast iron. Lunch is included somewhere along the way.

The finish on the Bosphorus

The day ends with a two-hour sunset cruise. Istanbul's skyline of domes and minarets looks different from the water, with Europe on one bank and Asia on the other. For the wider picture of boats and routes, read our Bosphorus cruise guide.

What the tour leaves out

  • Topkapi Palace is not on the itinerary, and its entry ticket is not included. Give it its own half-day; see our Topkapi Palace guide.
  • Hagia Sophia's interior costs extra and takes extra time. Your hour there is a guided visit, not a leisurely museum morning.
  • Tips are not included.
  • Bazaars and the Basilica Cistern are not listed. Do them separately: Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar, Basilica Cistern.

Where the day gets hard

Ten hours is long. You are on your feet at every stop, with coach hops in between, and the Balat and Fener streets are steep and uneven. It is a lot for young children or anyone with limited mobility.

The other thing to check is timing. Sunset moves a lot between seasons, and the listed 10-hour day starts at 08:20. Ask Helios how the cruise lines up with sunset on your date before you plan an evening around it.

It is also a shared tour. Up to 20 guests means a moving group, a fixed pace and little room to linger at a stop you love.

How to prepare

  • Wear comfortable, closed shoes that grip on slopes, and layers: it is breezier on the water after dark than on the streets.
  • Dress for mosques: shoulders and knees covered, and a scarf for women's head covering. Our what to wear in Istanbul guide has the detail.
  • Carry a little cash or a card for the Hagia Sophia ticket if you want to go in, and for tips.
  • Bring water and a charged phone for photographs.

If this is one day in a longer stay, our 3-day Istanbul itinerary shows where it fits.
