Istanbul, Antalya and Izmir: How to Travel Between Them
Flights win most legs between these three cities, but the Antalya–Izmir link is the awkward one.
The short answer
Between Istanbul and Antalya, or Istanbul and Izmir, fly. Both are domestic flights of roughly an hour and a half in the air, and the road alternatives are long. Between Antalya and Izmir there is no easy answer. You choose between a long day by road, ideally with a stop in between, and a flight that may connect through Istanbul. Check current timetables for that link, because direct options change.

Istanbul: choose your airport carefully
Istanbul has two airports, one on each continent, and neither is close to Sultanahmet. Your hotel's side of the city, the traffic and your flight time matter more than the ticket. Antalya and Izmir: the connection points
Each city has one main airport, so flights are simple. Antalya is the Mediterranean resort base. Izmir is the Aegean gateway, and many travellers use it to reach the ancient sites and beach towns nearby. If you fly into Istanbul and home from Antalya or Izmir, you save backtracking. Ask airlines about "open-jaw" tickets, where you fly into one city and out of another.
The awkward leg: Antalya to Izmir
The two cities are far apart by road, and the route crosses hills and lakeland. Most travellers who go overland break it up, for example at Denizli, the usual gateway to Pamukkale. Do not assume you can fit it around a flight the same day. If you are short on time, compare the cost of a connection through Istanbul with the time a long road day would take.

Is it better to fly or take the bus from Istanbul to Antalya?
Fly if time matters. The bus is much cheaper in some cases but takes a very long time, and an overnight ride is tiring.
