Hurghada, Cairo and Luxor: How to Move Between Them

Flights, roads and trains compared, with the connection points that decide how many days you really need.

Hurghada, Cairo and Luxor: How to Move Between Them

Short answer: fly between Hurghada and Cairo, and fly or take the train between Cairo and Luxor. Reserve the road for the Hurghada–Luxor leg. That is the one pair of the three that sits close together, with a desert road between them. Cairo is the far corner of the triangle, and the road to it is long enough to eat a day.

This guide is for anyone based on the Red Sea coast, or passing through, who wants the Pyramids and Luxor's temples without wasting days in a vehicle.

The shape of the triangle

Hurghada sits on the Red Sea. Luxor lies inland on the Nile, reached by a road across the Eastern Desert. Cairo is far to the north-west, and the road there is a long haul. The Nile flows north, so travelling from Cairo to Luxor means going south, upstream, through the valley.

LegBest optionThe honest catch
Hurghada – CairoDomestic flightRoad works but takes most of a day each way
Cairo – LuxorFlight, or overnight trainTrain is atmospheric but slower and less predictable
Hurghada – LuxorRoad, private car or coachAn early start, and a long day if you try it as a round trip

Connection points that matter

Most flights link through airports at Hurghada, Cairo and Luxor, but not every pairing has frequent direct service, and schedules change by season. Do not build a plan around a timetable you saw in an old blog post, including this one. Check the airlines directly.

In Cairo, the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum are both on the Giza side, a drive from the city centre. Allow transfer time from the airport and across the city. Traffic is a real factor, not a footnote.

In Luxor, the sights split across the river: Karnak and Luxor Temple on the east bank, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple on the west. Do not underestimate how hot the west bank gets in summer, and go early.

If you only have two days

It can be done, and it is tiring. Helios runs Cairo and Luxor by plane over two days from Hurghada, as a private tour. Pick-up is at 05:00. Day one covers Giza, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum; day two crosses to Luxor for Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. It suits people who would rather fly than sit in a car, and who accept that two ancient capitals in two days means a fast pace. A small transfer surcharge applies for pickups outside Hurghada.

If that sounds too compressed, our piece on choosing Cairo or Luxor as a day trip from Hurghada helps you pick one and do it properly.

If you have two weeks

The 14-day private Egypt tour is listed from Hurghada and travels by road, with a domestic flight between Cairo and Luxor and back built in. The itinerary covers Giza, Saqqara, Alexandria, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Fayoum, Memphis and Islamic Cairo, then Karnak and Luxor Temple. It continues to Edfu, Kom Ombo, Aswan and Abu Simbel on a 5-star Nile cruise, and returns to Luxor's West Bank for the Valley of the Kings. It is private, just your party, with an English-speaking guide. Nobody has to plan the connections themselves.

Already in Luxor, or coming for the eclipse

The Total Solar Eclipse over Luxor trip is a small-group, shared day of up to 15 guests, running from your Luxor hotel to Karnak Temple on 2 August 2027. Totality is due around 13:02. The final programme and price are not yet confirmed, and tickets are subject to availability. If you are linking it with Cairo or Hurghada, book transport early and expect everything to be busy.

What to verify before you go

  • Flight timetables on the airline or airport websites, including whether your leg is direct.
  • Train schedules and booking rules on the national railway's official channels.
  • Museum and site opening hours and ticket rules, especially the Grand Egyptian Museum, on official sites.
  • Visa and entry requirements on the official Egyptian government portal.
  • Road conditions for desert crossings, via your hotel or a local operator.

FAQ

Can I do Cairo from Hurghada in one day?

Only by flying, and it is a very early start. By road it is too long to be pleasant. Our two-day flight tour is a more comfortable use of the same effort.

Is the train from Cairo to Luxor worth it?

If you enjoy the journey as part of the trip, yes. If you are short on time, flying is simpler. Check current schedules and booking rules on official sources.

Which is closer to Hurghada, Cairo or Luxor?

Luxor, by a clear margin. It is a road trip across the desert, while Cairo is a flight away or a much longer drive.

Do the Helios tours start in Cairo?

No. The tours featured here are listed from Hurghada or, for the eclipse, Luxor. Contact us if you want a guide based in Cairo.
