Greece with Children: A Comfortable Pace for Athens and Santorini

Two bases, short mornings and one honest verdict on which days are too long for young children.

Who this is for and the short answer

This is for parents planning a first family trip to Greece who want to see the famous places without exhausting everyone. The short answer: choose two bases, Athens and one island such as Santorini, and give each at least three nights. Do not chain in a third stop. Greece rewards slow days, and children tend to run out of patience before adults run out of sights.

The unflattering part: the headline sights are exposed, hot in summer, and built from stone and steps. A rushed itinerary that adds Delphi, a ferry and a sunset on the same two days is where family trips tend to fall apart.

The route: Athens first, then one island

Start in Athens, where you can recover from the journey and see the ancient sites in short, outdoor bursts. Then move to Santorini for a slower, view-led stretch. Check ferry and flight options on official operator and airline sites, and avoid a same-day connection straight after a big sightseeing day.

Athens: short, outdoor, flexible

The Acropolis is the one sight worth building a morning around, and it is better as a short visit than a marathon. The marble is open to the sky with little shade, so go early or late in the day and keep it to about the length of a school lesson. Our Acropolis and Parthenon guided visit takes 3 hours and follows the entrance, Propylaea, Parthenon and Erechtheion. It runs as a small group of up to 12 guests or as a private tour for your own party, and both follow the same route. Admission and transport are only included if confirmed in your quote. For tickets and timing, read our Acropolis visit guide.

After that, stop. Give the afternoon to something with no ticket and no queue: a lunch in the old streets below the hill, a walk through a park, ice cream, a rest at the hotel.

Alternatives to long museum visits

  • Choose one room or one theme in a museum, then leave while interest is still high.
  • Let children pick what to look for, such as animals on pots, statues with missing noses or a favourite column.
  • Use hilltops and open ruins, where children can move and talk freely.

Delphi: the day to think twice about

Our Delphi sanctuary and mountain village day trip is 10 hours by road from Athens, covering the archaeological site, the Temple of Apollo and the village of Arachova. It is a rewarding day, but a long one, with a lot of time in a vehicle. For toddlers and young children it is probably too much. Older children who cope with road travel and like mythology may enjoy it. It also runs in small-group and private formats. If you are unsure, skip it and keep that day light.

Santorini: plan around steps, crowds and sun

Santorini's famous villages are lanes and stairs, which is awkward with pushchairs and tired legs. Our Oia village and sunset viewpoints walk lasts 3 hours and links Oia's lanes, the maritime museum quarter, the castle viewpoint and Amoudi Bay. It is offered as a shared small group or a private tour. Sunset viewpoints get crowded, so decide in advance whether your children can cope with standing in a crowd, or whether a quieter earlier hour suits them better. Amoudi Bay is down by the water and makes a natural pause. Remember that the climb back is part of the day. For seasonal details, see Santorini in October.

What to verify on official sites

  • Opening hours, closing days and ticket rules for children at each archaeological site.
  • Ferry and flight timetables between Athens and Santorini.
  • Our quote: guide, access, transport and what is or is not included.

When you request a Helios trip, give your date, group size and interests, and mention the children's ages. Our team checks local guide availability and sends back a plan and quote.

Greece with children FAQ

How many cities should a family include?

Two bases suit most families. Athens plus one island leaves room for rest, and every added stop costs a travel day.

Is the Acropolis too much for young children?

It can be if you stay long. It is exposed and uneven, so a short early or late visit followed by a rest works better than a full day.

Is the Delphi day trip right for a family?

It takes 10 hours and involves a lot of road time. It is better suited to older children than to toddlers.

Are the tours private?

Each of the three tours runs either as a small group of up to 12 guests or as a private tour for your own party. The format is chosen when you book.
