Private or Shared Guided Day in Greece: How to Choose

Group size, flexibility, meeting points and the questions to ask before you book a guided day in Athens, Delphi or Santorini.

The short answer

Choose the shared small group if you are travelling alone or as a couple, you are happy with a set pace, and you want the lowest starting rate. Choose private if you need to control timing, you are travelling with children or someone who walks slowly, or you want to spend longer on what interests you. The private format is listed at a much higher starting rate, so ask for a quote before you decide.

All three Helios Greece days below run in both formats. The group and private options follow the same route. What changes is who is with you and how much the day can bend.

Who this is for

This is for travellers who have already decided on a guided day in Greece and are stuck on the format. If you are still deciding whether to go to the Acropolis at all, start with our Acropolis visit guide.

The unflattering part: twelve people at a site such as the Acropolis means waiting for stragglers and sharing the guide's attention at busy viewpoints. Private removes that, but it is not a guarantee of an empty site. The Acropolis is crowded for much of the year whoever you book with.

The three days, and which format suits each

Acropolis: short and well suited to a shared group

The Acropolis and Parthenon guided visit takes three hours. It runs from the Acropolis entrance through the Propylaea to the Parthenon and the Erechtheion. A shared group works well here because the route is fixed and the walking is on one hill. Go private if you want to linger at the Erechtheion, or if the climb and the uneven, polished marble worry anyone in your party. Summer heat is the real constraint, because there is very little shade on top.

Delphi: a long day where comfort matters

The Delphi sanctuary and mountain village day is ten hours by road from Athens. It covers the Delphi archaeological site, the Temple of Apollo and the mountain village of Arachova. Delphi lies well north-west of Athens in the mountains, so a large share of the day is spent in a vehicle. In a shared group you travel and stop on the group's schedule. Private gives you more say over breaks and how long you spend at the site versus the village. Wear proper shoes: the sanctuary climbs the hillside.

Oia: where the crowd is the issue

The Oia village and sunset viewpoints walk lasts three hours. It covers the Oia lanes, the maritime museum quarter, the castle viewpoint and Amoudi Bay. Oia's lanes are narrow, and the viewpoints fill up at sunset, so group size is felt more here than almost anywhere. If sunset timing matters to you, ask whether your quote is timed around it. Check the season too: our Santorini in October guide covers what is open outside peak months.

Meeting points and transport

The listed trips travel by road, but meeting points are not fixed on the trip pages. Helios confirms your guide, access, transport and final price before booking, so ask for the exact meeting point in writing. Admission, transport, food and tastings are not included unless confirmed in your quote. Read the quote line by line for each of these.

Questions to ask any supplier

  • Is this shared or private, and what is the maximum group size?
  • Where and when do we meet, and is transport included?
  • Is admission included, or do we buy it ourselves?
  • Which languages does the guide speak? Ask for this per booking rather than assuming.
  • What happens if the weather is extreme or the site closes?
  • Can the start time or stops be changed, and is that in writing?

What to verify on official sites before you go

Check the official sites for the archaeological sites you plan to visit. Confirm opening hours, entry rules and any closures on public holidays, because these change. In Athens, national days affect what is open: see our note on Ohi Day, 28 October. Do not rely on any blog, including this one, for hours or ticket rules.

Greece private or shared tours: FAQ

Is the shared tour really small?

The listed shared format is a small group of up to 12 guests. The actual number on your date depends on bookings, so ask when you enquire.

Do private and shared tours follow the same route?

Yes. The group and private options on these trips follow the same route. Private gives you your own party and more room to adjust the day.

Is admission included?

Not unless it is confirmed in your quote. Admission, transport, food and tastings are listed as not included by default.

How do I book?

Send your date, group size and interests. The team checks local guide availability and returns a plan and quote, confirming your guide, access, transport and final price before you book.
