Greece Five-City Itinerary: Athens to Rhodes by Air and Sea

How to link Athens, Santorini, Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Rhodes without spending the trip in transit.

Short answer: yes, Athens, Santorini, Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Rhodes fit into one trip, but only with roughly ten to twelve days and mostly by plane or fast ferry. In a week, drop two of the five. Every transfer costs most of a day, and Greece's islands are not linked the way mainland cities are.

The order that wastes least time is Thessaloniki, Athens, Santorini, Heraklion, Rhodes. It starts in the north and then moves south and east through the islands, with no doubling back.

Who this route is for

It suits travellers who want range: a northern Greek city, the capital, a caldera island, Crete and a medieval walled town. It does not suit anyone who wants to unpack once or sit on a beach. Plan about two nights per stop, three in Athens if you want a day trip.

The route, leg by leg

LegBest wayHonest note
Thessaloniki to AthensTrain or short flightThe train takes several hours but is simple. A flight is quicker in the air, though airport time evens it out.
Athens to SantoriniFlightA ferry from Piraeus is possible but long. Choose it only if you enjoy the sea more than you value the time.
Santorini to HeraklionFast ferry in season, or flightSailings thin out outside summer, and strong winds can cancel them. Keep a buffer day before any flight home.
Heraklion to RhodesFlightThis is the weakest link. Direct options are limited and may require a connection via Athens. Ferries are infrequent and long.

Day visit or overnight?

Overnight: all five cities. Santorini's sunsets, Rhodes' Old Town after the cruise crowds leave and Thessaloniki's evenings reward a night each.

Day visit: Delphi from Athens, and Oia from wherever you stay on Santorini. Skip any one-day dash to an island you do not sleep on. You would spend the day in transit.

Where Helios fits

Our featured tours cover the Athens and Santorini stretch only. They do not start in Thessaloniki, Heraklion or Rhodes. If you want a guide in one of those cities, send an enquiry and we will check what we can arrange.

Each of these runs either as a small-group shared tour of up to 12 guests or as a private tour for your own party. Admission, transport and food are not included unless confirmed in your quote.

Timing and weather

Midsummer is hot, and the Acropolis has little shade, so go early or choose a shoulder month. Ferries are most exposed to wind in high summer and outside the main season. If you travel in autumn, our Santorini in October guide covers what stays open, and our Ohi Day piece explains the 28 October closures in Athens.

What to verify on official sites

  • Ferry timetables and current sailings on the operators' own sites.
  • Airline schedules, especially Heraklion to Rhodes.
  • Train services between Thessaloniki and Athens on the national rail operator's site.
  • Opening hours, entry rules and any timed-ticket requirements for archaeological sites, via the Ministry of Culture.

FAQ

How many days does a Greece five-city itinerary need?

Ten to twelve days is realistic. Fewer than eight means rushing, or cutting a city.

Can I do it without flying?

On paper, partly: train to Athens, then ferries. In practice the island legs are slow and weather-dependent, and Heraklion to Rhodes is the hardest by sea.

Is Delphi worth a day from Athens?

If you care about ancient sites, yes, but it is a full day on the road. On a tight route, the Acropolis alone is enough.

Can Helios guide me in Thessaloniki, Heraklion or Rhodes?

Our featured tours start in Athens and Santorini. Send us an enquiry with your dates and interests, and we will check what is possible there.
