Greece 7 Day Itinerary: Athens, Delphi and Santorini
A week fits Athens, one big day trip and one island if you accept a travel day, and it leaves several famous places for next time.
The short answer: three bases at most, two in practice
In seven days you can do Athens, one long day trip to Delphi, and one island, Santorini. That is it. Greece is a country of water and distance, and every extra stop costs you half a day in ports, airports and luggage.
This plan suits first-time visitors who want ancient sites plus one classic island view. It does not suit anyone who wants Crete, Mykonos, Meteora and the Peloponnese as well. Those are for another trip.
The route, day by day
Days 1-2: Athens
Use day 1 to arrive and walk the old neighbourhoods below the Acropolis. On day 2, go up the Acropolis: the entrance, the Propylaea gateway, the Parthenon and the Erechtheion with its porch of columns shaped as maidens. Summer heat on the exposed rock is real, and so are the crowds, so the first or last part of the day is kinder. Our Acropolis visit guide covers tickets and timing.
If you want context rather than just a view, Helios runs the Acropolis and Parthenon guided visit, about 3 hours by road from and back to Athens. It is bookable as a small group (up to 12 guests, shared) or as a private tour for your own party. Both follow the same route. Admission and transport are not included unless confirmed in your quote.
Day 3: Delphi
Delphi is the best day trip from Athens, but it is a long one. The Delphi sanctuary and mountain village tour takes about 10 hours, all by road, from and back to Athens. You see the archaeological site, the Temple of Apollo and the mountain village of Arachova. Expect hours on the road, a steep hillside site and an early departure. Tired travellers sometimes find the second half of the day mostly spent in a seat. It is still worth it, because the setting on the slope of Mount Parnassus is unlike anything in Athens.
It also runs in two formats: small group (up to 12, shared) or private. We confirm your guide, access, transport and final price before booking.
Day 4: the travel day
Athens to Santorini goes south across the Aegean, by flight or ferry. A flight takes under an hour in the air, but allow for the airport at both ends. A ferry is much longer and more exposed to weather and schedule changes. Count this day as mostly spent. Do not plan a major sight in Athens that morning.
Days 5-6: Santorini
Santorini is small. The caldera views, the white-and-blue lanes of Fira and Oia and a sunset are the core of it. Oia at sunset is crowded; the lanes and viewpoints fill well before the light goes, so go earlier, or accept the crush.
For a guided look, Helios has the Oia village and sunset viewpoints walk, about 3 hours by road from and back to Santorini. It covers the Oia lanes, the maritime museum quarter, the castle viewpoint and Amoudi Bay. Small group (up to 12, shared) and private formats are both available. The second Santorini day is best left open for a beach, a village or rest. If you travel outside summer, read Santorini in October to see what is open.
Day 7: return
Fly back to Athens, or onward, leaving a generous margin before any international flight. Do not book the last morning ferry and an evening long-haul flight on the same day without a buffer.
What to leave for another trip
- Meteora, Crete and Corfu: each needs its own internal flight or a long drive.
- Mykonos and a second island: adding one means another ferry day and a thinner Santorini.
- The Peloponnese (Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nafplio): rewarding, but it competes with Delphi for the same day.
A slower alternative
Drop Delphi. Spend three nights in Athens and four in Santorini, with the Acropolis day and one slow city day. You gain slack, less road time and a Santorini week that is not rushed. The tradeoff is real: you lose the best day trip, and four nights on a small island can feel long if the weather is poor or the ferries are disrupted. It suits people who prefer rest to ticking things off.
What to verify before you go
- Current flight and ferry timetables and the season they run in.
- Opening hours and ticket rules for the Acropolis and Delphi, on the official sites.
- Your Helios quote: guide, access, transport and final price are confirmed with you before booking.
Greece 7 day itinerary FAQ
Is seven days enough for Athens and Santorini?
Yes, if you accept that one day is mostly travel. Two days in Athens and two on Santorini, plus a Delphi day, is about the limit.
Can I skip Delphi?
Yes. It is a 10-hour day by road. If you prefer a slower week, spend the extra time in Athens or on the island.
Are the Helios tours private?
They run in two formats: a small shared group of up to 12 guests, or a private tour for just your party. Choose the format when you request your quote.
Does Helios include tickets and transfers?
Not by default. Admission, transport, food and tastings are included only if confirmed in your quote.
