Private or Shared Guided Day in Germany: How to Choose
What group size, flexibility and meeting points mean in practice, and what to ask before you book.
The short answer
For the three Helios day tours covered here, the Sachsenhausen visit from Berlin and the two Bamberg walks, the only booking format is a shared small-group tour of up to 15 guests. None of them lists a private option, so do not book expecting one. For a memorial visit or a two-hour old-town walk, a group that size usually works well. It stops working if you need to change the pace, the start time or the route.
Who this is for
This is for travellers comparing Germany private shared tours who want a guide for context but have no strong reason to control the day. It is less useful if you have reduced mobility, need a specific start time or are travelling with someone who will want to linger. In those cases, ask a supplier for a private format in writing.
What shared means on the day
Group size. Up to 15 is a cap, not a promise of 15. You will still share the guide's attention, so questions are fine but long tangents are not.
Flexibility. The route and timings are fixed. At Sachsenhausen the itinerary runs roll call yard, Jewish barracks, cell block, Station Z, then the Soviet special camp memorial, with about three hours on the grounds. If you want longer in one place, you will have to return alone or move on with the group.
Meeting points. Each tour starts at a set place, and none includes hotel pickup or drop-off.
- Sachsenhausen: Friedrichstraße station in Berlin, 10:00.
- Bamberg old town walk: the Tourist Information at Geyerswörthstraße 5, close to the river.
- Bamberg beer walk: the Pfahlplätzchen in the old town.
The three days, compared
Sachsenhausen from Berlin: the heavy one
The Sachsenhausen Memorial guided visit takes about six hours. Roughly an hour of that is travel north to Oranienburg by public transport, with an introduction on the way. The guide travels with you, but your public transport ticket is not included, and neither are food and drinks. A donation to the memorial is included. It is a long, emotionally demanding day on foot. A shared format suits it if you want historical context, and the guide leaves time for quiet. For background first, read our respectful guide to the memorial sites.
Bamberg old town walk: the short one
The Bamberg Old Town Walk lasts two hours. It goes through half-timbered lanes, up the Domberg, down to the Old Town Hall in the Regnitz and on to Little Venice. You see the cathedral from outside only. A guided tour inside and museum entry are not included. This walk is well suited to a shared format, because the pace is steady and little is lost if others ask questions.
Bamberg beer history walk: check the length
The Bamberg Beer History Walk is for adults aged 18 and over and ends at a brewpub. The tasting of four small beers is optional and paid for separately on the spot. The listing shows two hours, while the description calls it a 90-minute walk, so confirm the length when you book if you have a train to catch.
Timing and transport
Build the Sachsenhausen day around the 10:00 meeting, and allow for getting to Friedrichstraße first. Buy the correct transport ticket for the zones before you meet; the zone ABC day ticket is not included. If you are planning a longer Berlin stay, our three-day Berlin itinerary shows where a memorial day fits. For Bamberg, both walks start in the old town, so on foot from most central hotels is realistic. Our Bamberg travel guide covers the rest of the town.
Questions to ask any supplier
- Is this tour private or shared, and what is the maximum group size?
- What happens if the minimum is not reached or the group is full?
- Which language will the guide use on my date?
- Where exactly is the meeting point, and what do I do if I am late?
- Which tickets, entry fees or donations are included, and which are not?
- How much walking is involved, and is the route step-free?
- What is the cancellation and change policy?
What to verify on official sites
Before you book, check the current opening days and visitor rules on the official Sachsenhausen Memorial site, and the public transport timetable and zone map for Berlin. For Bamberg, check the town's official tourism site for events or closures on your date. Do not rely on a blog, ours included, for opening hours or fares. Check the tour page for the start time and availability of your date; the Bamberg tours do not list a fixed start time in the information we have.

Germany private vs shared tours: FAQ
Does Helios offer private tours of Sachsenhausen or Bamberg?
Not on the trips described here. Each lists only a small-group shared tour of up to 15 guests. Contact Helios before booking if you need something different.
Is a shared tour a bad idea for a memorial site?
Not necessarily. The Sachsenhausen guide gives context and leaves time for quiet. The compromise is a fixed route and timing, so you cannot linger at one spot.
Are hotel pickups included?
No. None of the three tours includes hotel pickup or drop-off, so you go to the meeting point yourself.
Which language will my guide speak?
The tour pages say commentary or guiding is in English or German. Confirm the language for your date when booking.
