Cairo by Plane from Hurghada over New Year: the Flights and the Day

The real flight times for 28–30 December, what fits between landing and take-off, and the booking rules that catch people out.

The Pyramids of Giza, the heart of a Cairo day trip by plane from Hurghada.

Short answer: yes, Cairo works as a day trip from Hurghada in the New Year week, but only by plane, and only if you book early. On 28, 29 and 30 December there are morning flights that land in Cairo between 06:00 and 09:05 and evening flights that leave Cairo at 19:35 or 19:50. That gives you roughly nine to twelve hours on the ground — enough for the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum, with lunch in between. What makes the week different is not the sightseeing. It is the seats.

This piece sets out the flights we plan with for those dates, how a day built around them actually runs, and the ticketing rules that matter more at New Year than at any other time.

The flights, date by date

We checked the schedules on 22 October 2026 for a same-day return, one adult in economy. Times are local; Hurghada and Cairo are in the same time zone.

On the same search, a return ticket cost between about 11,700 and 13,100 Egyptian pounds per person, depending on the day. That is a snapshot, not a promise: domestic fares climb as the planes fill, and over New Year they fill quickly. Airlines also adjust timetables at short notice, so we re-check the flight when we issue your ticket and tell you if anything moved.

How the day runs

Hotel pickup is about two hours before departure. Hurghada airport is close to most hotels in town, but domestic check-in still wants you there in good time, and pickups from El Gouna, Makadi Bay or Soma Bay need the extra margin.

Early flight: land at 06:00

With MS43 on the 29th or 30th you are collected at around 03:00 and land in Cairo at 06:00. It is a hard start, and it buys you the best part of the day. Your Egyptologist meets you at arrivals and you reach the Giza plateau while the light is still low and the coaches have not yet arrived. Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, then down to the Sphinx and the Valley Temple beside it. Lunch, then the Grand Egyptian Museum for the afternoon, with time for a drive through the city before you head back to the airport around 18:00–18:30. This is the rhythm of Cairo in a Day by Plane and of the Saqqara and Serapeum day, which swaps Giza for the Step Pyramid and the bull tombs.

Later flight: land at 09:00

On the 28th, Air Cairo's SM173 is the only morning option, and on the 29th and 30th MS45 at 07:55 is the gentler alternative. Pickup is around 06:00, you land at about 09:00 and the plateau is busier when you reach it. You still fit the Pyramids, the Sphinx, lunch and the museum; what you lose is slack. Our Cairo by plane for late risers is built around exactly this flight, and it is the one to choose if the people travelling with you include children or anyone who will not enjoy a 03:00 alarm.

The evening flight home

Both return flights leave Cairo between 19:35 and 19:50 and land about an hour later. With the drive back, most guests are at their hotel in Hurghada around 21:30–22:00. If you are staying further out, add the transfer time.

Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum: what one day really holds

Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum sit on the same side of the city, a short drive apart. That is what makes a single day possible. Give the plateau about two hours and the museum at least two. The museum's Tutankhamun galleries alone could take a whole morning; with a guide who knows where to stop, two to three hours shows you the essentials without rushing them.

What does not fit: Saqqara and Dahshur on top of Giza, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir as well as the new one, or the Citadel. Each of those is another hour or two plus Cairo traffic, and in the holiday week the traffic is heavier, not lighter. If you want them, take two days instead — our companion piece on two days in Cairo by plane over New Year sets out the options.

Going inside a pyramid and riding a camel are both possible but optional and paid on the spot. Your guide will tell you which of them are worth the time on the day you are there.

Booking in the New Year week

Three things decide whether this trip happens the way you want it to.

  • Book early. We buy the flight tickets once you book, and the fare we can get on the day you book is the fare we can get. Every week of waiting in November and December narrows the choice of flights and raises the price. For 28–30 December, booking in October or early November is not over-cautious.
  • Send names exactly as written in the passport. First name, middle names and surname, in the order and spelling the passport uses. This is the single most common thing that goes wrong.
  • Bring that same passport. It is a domestic flight, so there is no visa or border, but airport check-in in Egypt asks for a passport, not a hotel card or a photo on a phone.

Name changes: the rules differ by airline

Over New Year this matters more than usual, because there are no spare seats to fall back on.

  • EgyptAir (MS43, MS45, MS48) corrects spelling mistakes in a name but does not transfer a ticket to another person. If someone in your group cannot travel, their seat cannot simply be given to someone else.
  • Air Cairo (SM173, SM174) allows one name change on a paid booking, for a fee plus any difference in fare, at least 24 hours before departure. That is useful, and it is not free.

Either way, the cheapest change is the one you never need: check every name against the passport before you send it to us.

Is the drive an alternative?

Not in this week. By road Cairo is a long way from Hurghada each way, which turns a day trip into a night drive, a few hours of sightseeing and another night drive. Over the holidays the road is busier still. If a flight is not possible, two days with a night in Cairo is the better plan than one day by road.

FAQ

Are the flights included in the trip price?

Yes. On all our Cairo-by-plane trips the return domestic flights are part of the price, together with hotel transfers, a private Egyptologist, entrance fees and lunch.

Can we choose between the 05:00 and the 07:55 flight?

On 29 and 30 December, yes, subject to seats. On 28 December the morning flight is Air Cairo's 08:00 departure.

What happens if the airline changes the schedule?

We re-check the flights when we issue tickets and again before the trip, and adjust the pickup and the day plan to the new times. You hear from us directly.

Can we do 31 December?

Ask us. We confirm the schedule for New Year's Eve when you book, and it is the day most likely to sell out.
