A Day in Istanbul Built Around the Bosphorus Dinner Cruise
How to fill the hours before a three-hour dinner cruise with a Turkish night show, and what the evening is really like.
Book this cruise if you want dinner, music and the lit-up shores of the Bosphorus in one easy evening. Skip it if you want a quiet, candlelit crossing. The boat is a large shared dinner boat, and for about 90 minutes a belly dancing, folk dance and live music show runs on board, with a DJ. It is lively by design.
It is also a very easy evening. Helios's Bosphorus dinner cruise with a Turkish night show starts and ends in Istanbul, lasts three hours and is booked as a shared small-group tour for up to 15 guests. It is an evening in the city, not a day trip. That leaves the daytime free for sightseeing on your own.
The day, in order
Morning: Sultanahmet on foot
Start in the old city, where the big sights sit within walking distance of one another. Go early, because queues and crowds build through the morning. See Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and if you have energy left, go underground at the Basilica Cistern. Mosques pause visits around prayer times, so plan around that rather than fighting it.
Afternoon: bazaar, lunch, rest
Walk to the Grand Bazaar for an hour or two, have a long lunch, then go back to your hotel. Do not skip the rest. You will be sitting at a table for three hours that evening, and a sightseeing day on cobbles is tiring.
Evening: the cruise
The trip facts give no fixed departure time, so confirm it when you book and work backwards. If you choose the optional hotel pickup, the driver collects you from a central European-side hotel. Without it, you make your own way to the pier on the European shore. Getting around Istanbul covers the options, and evening traffic in the city can be slow.
What happens on board
- Boarding, about 15 minutes. You take your seat at your table.
- Dolmabahçe Palace and Ortaköy, about 30 minutes. The boat passes the palace front and the Ortaköy mosque while dinner is served. You choose your main course from five dishes, and soft drinks are unlimited.
- Bosphorus Bridge to Rumeli Hisarı, about 30 minutes. You sail under the lit-up bridge to the fortress of Rumeli Hisarı, where the boat turns.
- Turkish night show, about 90 minutes. Belly dancing, folk dances, live music and a DJ.
- Beylerbeyi Palace and the Maiden's Tower, about 15 minutes. On the way back you pass the palace on the Asian shore and the Maiden's Tower, then return to the pier.
What a competitor might not tell you
- It is loud. The show takes up half the evening. If you want to sit quietly on deck, this is the wrong boat; our Bosphorus cruise guide compares other styles of trip.
- You see the palaces from the water, at night. Expect lit façades, not detail. You do not go inside anything.
- Alcohol costs extra. It is available as a separate option. Personal purchases on board are also not included.
- Hotel pickup is optional. Without it, transport to and from the pier is up to you.
Who it suits
It suits first-timers who want a set evening with dinner included and no restaurant hunting. It also works for friends and families who enjoy a show.
