One Day in Bohol: Chocolate Hills, Tarsiers and the Loboc River
A paced, honest plan for seeing Bohol's interior in a single day from Panglao.
Yes, one day is enough for the Chocolate Hills, as long as you accept that it is a driving day with short walks, not a hike. From Panglao you can reach the viewpoint in Carmen, meet tarsiers, pass through a mahogany forest and finish on the Loboc River, all in about seven hours. The price of that is time in a vehicle and fairly brief stops.
If you want a relaxed, unscheduled day, skip it. If you want the headline sights of inland Bohol without arranging transport yourself, the Bohol Countryside Tour from Panglao follows exactly this route. It is a shared tour for up to 15 guests, so expect company at every stop.
Who this day is for
It suits travellers based in Panglao, or in Tagbilaran or Loboc, who have one free day and want context from a local guide rather than a map and a taxi. It is less suited to anyone who dislikes long road sections, or who expects the hills to be a place you wander through.
The route, in the order you meet it
Pickup and the drive inland
The Helios tour collects you from your Panglao hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the first hour is simply the drive across Bohol. Guests staying in Tagbilaran or Loboc join at a set meeting point instead. Confirm your pickup time when you book.
Tarsier conservation area (about 45 minutes)
Tarsiers are tiny, big-eyed primates that sleep through much of the day. You will usually see them clinging motionless to branches. Visitors are asked to stay quiet, use no flash and not touch them. It is a short, calm stop, and the animals are not performing, so manage your expectations.
Bilar Man-Made Forest (about 20 minutes)
This is a planted stretch of tall mahogany trees. You drive through and stop for photos. It is a pleasant, shaded break from the road, not a destination in itself.
Chocolate Hills viewpoint in Carmen (about 1 hour)
This is the centrepiece. You climb steps to a viewpoint over more than a thousand rounded, grassy hills. You look at the hills from a distance rather than walk among them. The viewpoint can be busy, and the steps are the main physical effort of the day. The colour depends on the season: the hills turn brown in the dry season, and at other times of year they are green. Do not expect chocolate if you visit in the wet months.
Loboc River (about 1 hour 30 minutes)
The last stop is the river, where you can add a cruise with lunch before the drive back. The cruise is optional and not included. If you skip it, plan your own lunch so you are not hungry on the road home.
Timing and transport
Seven hours is the tour's stated duration. Most of the day is moving between stops, so keep your own plans for that day light. Bring water, sun protection and shoes that grip, because of the viewpoint steps. For more on what to carry, see our Philippines packing list.
Optional extra stops, such as Baclayon Church or a cave, are not included, so ask your guide whether they fit the day. A local English-speaking guide, air-conditioned transport and Panglao hotel pickup and drop-off are included. Site entry fees are paid on the day, and tips are not included.
If you are staying in Cebu rather than Panglao, read Bohol Day Trip from Cebu: Is It Worth It? before you decide, since this tour starts from Panglao.
What to verify before you go
- Access and entry rules: check the current rules for the Chocolate Hills viewpoint and the tarsier site with Bohol's official tourism channels or the site operators. Rules and opening arrangements can change.
- Weather: typhoon season can disrupt tours. See Philippines in October and November and the month-by-month guide.
- The river cruise: confirm that it is running on your day if you want to add it.
For a wider view of the island, our Bohol guide covers more than one day, and Getting Around the Philippines explains the flights, ferries and vans that bring you here.
