Istanbul Europe and Asia Day Tour with Bosphorus Cruise: A Guide
What a 12-hour day across two continents includes, what it leaves out and how to prepare for it.
Should you spend a whole day on Helios's Istanbul Europe and Asia day tour with Bosphorus cruise? Yes, if you want to understand how the city fits together: two continents, one strait, hills with views and a long stretch on the water. No, if your priority is going inside Hagia Sophia or Topkapi Palace. This route does not visit them.
It is a long day. The trip lasts 12 hours, with hotel pickup in central Istanbul at about 08:20. The operator advises planning for 10 to 12 hours depending on the season. It runs as a shared small-group tour of up to 20 guests, not a private one, and you travel by bus with a guide all day.
How the day runs, stop by stop
Çamlıca Hill and Mosque (about 45 minutes)
You start on the Asian side. Çamlıca is one of the high points of the city, with a wide view over rooftops, water and the mosque on the hill. Haze can soften the view, so do not expect a postcard sky every time.
Beylerbeyi Palace (about 1 hour)
This is the sultans' summer palace on the Bosphorus shore, visited with your guide. The entry ticket is included. It is a different mood from the grand imperial sights on the European side: smaller, more domestic and right on the water.
Bosphorus Bridge (about 30 minutes)
You cross the bridge by bus, from Asia to Europe. Treat it as a transfer with a view rather than a stop. Istanbul traffic can stretch any crossing, so the timings are approximate.
Eyüp Sultan Mosque (about 45 minutes)
Eyüp is one of the most visited mosques in the city and is an active place of worship. Its atmosphere is quieter and more local than the main historic sights. Dress modestly and move respectfully. Our guide to what to wear in Istanbul covers shoulders, knees and head coverings.
Pierre Loti Hill (about 1 hour)
From Eyüp you ride the cable car, which is included, up to the hill above the Golden Horn. The view down the inlet is the reason to come. Allow time to wander rather than rush back to the bus.
Lunch and the Bosphorus cruise (about 2 hours on the water)
Lunch is included, along with the two-hour boat tour between Europe and Asia. Seeing the shoreline palaces, waterfront houses and both banks from the deck gives the day its shape. For a wider look at boats and timing, read our Bosphorus cruise guide.
What this tour is not
It is a panorama, not a deep dive. Most stops last 45 minutes to an hour, and only Beylerbeyi involves a guided interior visit. You will not see the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar or Sultanahmet's big sights. For those, see our guides to Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace. The tour also covers only the main Asian-side sights, so Kadıköy, Moda and Üsküdar are better explored on your own.
Who it suits
- First-timers who want orientation before choosing what to revisit.
- Travellers who prefer one guide and one bus to juggling ferries, taxis and tickets.
- People who enjoy being on the water and don't mind a full day of sitting between stops.
It suits you less if you tire easily on long days, dislike group pacing or want to linger. If you are still planning your wider stay, our 3-day Istanbul itinerary shows where a day like this fits.
How to prepare
- Be ready for pickup. Be in your central Istanbul hotel lobby by about 08:20.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Palace floors, hill paths and mosque visits all involve walking, and you may remove your shoes at the mosque.
- Bring layers. It is often breezier on the water than on land, and the season changes the day.
- Carry a scarf and cover your shoulders and knees for Eyüp.
- Bring cash for extras. Tips, personal expenses and drinks outside lunch are not included.
